Design Studio Creates Unique Polyps and Microphone for U2's 360 Tour

For superstar rock band U2’s massive U2360 tour, which delivered concerts to arenas worldwide from 2009 to 2011, the band needed a steering-wheel-shaped microphone strong enough for singer Bono to swing from. Oh - and it had to glow from within, illuminated by LEDs. U2 turned to 1212-Studio, which had provided challenging large, illuminated stage pieces for the same tour.

“Bono’s microphone was a much more complicated design and manufacturing challenge because of how it was going to be used on tour,” said Tommy Voeten, president of 1212-Studio. As with the set pieces, Voeten relied on his Dimension 3D printer. His team created several design iterations to optimize pressure points and position the many electronic components. Voeten was so satisfied with the quality and strength of the prototypes, he optimized the design so the finished product could be 3D printed as well. “The ABSplus material did a phenomenal job with strength and finish,” said Voeten. “It was strong, and we could finish it to perfection.”

Measure Units

Have you ever wondered why your status bar shows the XYZ coordinates in mm when your document units are IPS, or vice versa? Annoying? No, just a setting that's all up to you.

In the measure tool is where the units for the status bar lie. You'll see a button that looks like in/mm, which will open the Measure Units/Precision. In here you'll find the choice to use document settings (match your measure and status bar units to your document units) or use custom settings, to set the units and precision independent from the document units.

The setting is per user, like a System Option. Meaning that the Measure tool's Units/Precision will stay what you set them to for all files and all future sessions until you say otherwise.

Help Meeee!!

Here's a quick tip for all you multiple-versions-of-SolidWorks users out there:

If you want to quickly get to the Help for a different version of SolidWorks than what you have open, simply type help.solidworks.com into any web browser and you'll get a pull-down menu for 2010, 2011 or 2012 help.

You can also access Help in another language. So if you'd like a hand communicating with your co-worker in Germany, and Google Translate, hilarious as the results may be, just isn't cutting it for SolidWorks terms... help.solidworks.com is the way to go.

Announcing the SolidWorks World 2012 Internet Correspondent Contest

Here's your opportunity to attend SolidWorks World, for free!

Enter to win the SolidWorks World 2012 Internet Correspondent Contest. The winner of this contest wins a full SolidWorks World 2012 conference pass, as well as a hotel room for three nights and round trip airfare to and from San Diego, California. No justification from the boss needed!

The winner of the Internet Correspondent contest will meet up with Matthew West, Social Media Marketing Manager for SolidWorks, on February 12, where he or she will be provided with a video camera, a computer, and access to the press room at SolidWorks World 2012. He or she will be expected to cover the show through some combination of YouTube videos, tweets, Facebook posts, still pictures and blog entries to help bring the SolidWorks World experience to everyone who can't make it.

So how do you go about entering and winning this contest?  All you have to do is leave a comment on the SolidWorks blog, explaining why you should be picked over everyone else.  Why would you be the best Internet Correspondent? What would you do that no one else would think about? What insight could you bring that no one else could?

You have until 11:59 pm EDT on November 16, 2011 to enter. On November 17, 2011 (or shortly thereafter), a winner will be chosen based on the creativity and originality of the response. Looking for ideas? Check out Michael Lord's winning entry from last year.

You can click here to read the full terms and conditions of the contest. In a nutshell, you have to be 21 or older to enter, and citizens of Brazil, China and Quebec aren't eligible (sorry). If you work for Dassault Systemes, or a DS/SolidWorks reseller or partner, (or have any immediate family members who do) you can't enter. And if you slack off on your correspondent duties you'll face the unending ridicule of your peers, and no one wants that.

Don't forget, you can still save $100 if you register before January 20. And if you pay for two registrations, we'll throw in a third for free. And, as always, CSWPs save $100. You can see all of the registration deals at the SolidWorks World website.

Medical-Instrument Maker Maximizes Redesign

For Instrumentation Laboratory, moving from virtual to rapid prototyping cut manufacturing costs by 40 percent. The maker of in vitro diagnostic instruments developed its hemostasis testing system, the ACL TOP 500, to offer a lower price point than previous models. This required re-engineering many components to make them less expensive to manufacture.

A Fortus 3D Production System helped engineers redesign more parts compared with virtual prototyping. "We were able to re-engineer over 25 parts at a cost savings far greater than could be realized with traditional virtual prototyping," says Scott Notaro, mechanical engineering manager. Manufacturing costs shrank 40 percent.

Activation of Standalone SolidWorks Fails and Gives Contact Information Form in Japanese

If your Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) gets corrupted, it can cause activation problems.  You will notice this when you try to activate.  You select products to activate, fill in your email address and hit next.   If it pops up a "Contact Information (Japanese)" window (and you're not on a Japanese system) you most likely have a corrupt WMI directory. Chances are this will stop you from creating a "Manual Activation" file as well.

To resolve this, try following these steps from SolidWorks Knowledge Base Solution ID: S-053150:

Check to see if System Information can refresh.
(Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information)? If there are any errors when attempting to display information in System Information such as "unable to obtain information", then WMI could be corrupt on the PC.

The following steps taken from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm have been known to resolve this type of issue on a Windows® XP x64 PC.

  1. Click Start, Run and type CMD.EXE

Note: In Windows Vista®, open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
  2. Type this command and press Enter: net stop winmgmt
  3. Using Windows Explorer, rename the folder %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository. (For example, %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository_bad). %windir% represents the path to the Windows directory, which is typically C:\Windows.
  4. Switch to Command Prompt window, and type the following and press ENTER after each line: net start winmgmt
  5. Start System Information and confirm that the information refreshes without any errors.
  6. Reactivate SolidWorks.
